But when he happened upon Cielo Drive while searching for an upgrade to his 2,500 square foot home in the Hollywood Hills, he was smitten. “When I came back to that property, I felt safe, secure, loved and beauty,” he told ABC’s 20/20 in an interview decades later. The master bedroom was located at the back of the home on the far-left corner and had French doors that led to the swimming pool out back. However, by the time of the murders, Melcher and his partner, actress Candice Bergen, had moved out of the property. Music producer Quincy Jones, who was a friend of Jay Sebring, had also planned to join them that evening.
However, it is known that music and film talent manager Rudolph Altobelli bought the house for $86,000 in the early 1960s and then rented the property out. “I don’t anticipate any problems [selling it for that amount],” Altobelli’s real estate agent Adam Jakobson told the LA Times at the time. In November 1988, investor John Prell purchased it for $1.6 million, roughly $400,000 below the listing price. After renting out the house, Alvin Weintraub had it demolished in early 1994 and construction on a new home began shortly after.

But the memory of what happened there in the early morning hours of August 9, 1969, endures. The original house was designed by Arthur W. Hawes in 1941 and completed in 1942 for French actress Michèle Morgan.[1] It was similar to the house which sat on its own plateau directly below 10050, Cielo Drive, which was often called the Twin House. Built in 1964, this residence (which really is adjacent to Rick’s house) was presumably renovated to look like the French Normandy-style Cielo Drive estate where the real-life massacre took place. Melody Movie Ranch in Newhall hosted the set of the Western TV series Lancer (a real series), which was shot on the restored Old West street that had previously burned down in a 1962 brush fire. Formerly owned by singing cowboy Gene Autry, the ranch was subsequently purchased by brothers Renaud and Andre Veluzat, who returned it to its former glory. (It was once open to the public during the annual Cowboy Festival every April.) Additional Lancer scenes were filmed on Western Street at Universal Studios Hollywood. Below, a map of some of the film’s major locations, which include swinging nightspots, drive-in theaters, hillside getaways and secluded movie ranches. Notably, a few of the locations are tied to the real-life Sharon Tate (portrayed by Margot Robbie), the Manson followers’ most famous victim and the ghost that haunts Tarantino’s latest revisionist fable.

In denying him a record deal, Melcher secured himself a place on the cult leader's bad side. Storybook imagery aside, Terry Melcher’s time as a tenant of Cielo Drive marked the beginning of the home’s tragic end, for it was while living at this house that Melcher was introduced to ex-con-turned-aspiring-musician Charles Manson, and the property’s fate was sealed. When Tate dances on an airplane early in the film, she’s actually grooving on a soundstage in Pacoima.
She, several of her friends, and an acquaintance of the caretaker were murdered. Brilliant musician Sam Cooke was shot to death at the Hacienda Motel on December 11, 1964, supposedly by the manager (who said he attacked her). There was a lot of strangeness going on that night (Cooke had a woman with him at the motel who left with most of his clothing), and some people dispute the official story. Despite not actually taking part in the murders, Charles Manson was sentenced to death, when the state of California repealed the death penalty this was changed to life in prison. Inside the house, Folger had escaped from Krenwinkel and fled out a bedroom door to the pool area.
Steve McQueen had asked Quincy Jones and Jay Sebring to view a rough edit of his movie Bullitt earlier that day. After watching the movie, Sebring and Jones arranged to meet that evening at Sharon Tate’s house. However, Quincy Jones forgot about meeting up, which probably saved his life. In 1992, the main house was rented for a reported $11,000 a month to Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor, who subsequently constructed a recording studio in the home’s expansive living room. Sadly, the Manson family would come to destroy that happiness, and the Cielo Drive house would never be the same again. Sharon Tate, who was preparing to become a mother for the first time, described Cielo Drive as a ‘Love House,’ where she found nothing but happiness alongside her husband, her friends, and her dog Prudence. That evening, a group of Manson followers invaded the property and killed everyone inside, including Sharon Tate and her unborn child, in a massacre that shook everyone across the country.
